Why should all industries have sustainabilitygoals?  Simply because our global futuredepends on it. The significance of finding a sustainable future is rooted in mattersthat are very much linked. Is there one size fits all sustainability plan forall companies, nations, and people to follow. Sustainable goals follow and expand on the millennium development goalsthat were agreed upon in 2001. Would one unified plan, be enough to enhance a healthyenvironment, economic prosperity and social justice?  In September 2015, 193 member States of the UnitedNations met in New York to adopt 17 new Sustainable Development Goals alsoknown as “SDGs.”  These goals werecreated to make our world more flourishing, all-encompassing, resilient.

TheSDGs are a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity.  They are comprehensive so they can apply toall nations and people. These goals encompass safer communities, promotingequality, combating climate change, poverty, and hunger, and promoting betterlifestyles. These goals are slated for 2030 for all industries like food, consumer products, and pharmaceutical.  The 2030 Agenda presents long-term solutions to theforces that threaten the world and human society. But success will only bepossible through joint endeavor, between countries and across all communities.

Achievingthe SDGs can only be a joint endeavor if all stakeholders are aware of theseglobal goals and understand how they can contribute. Follow-up, review andlearning from the experiences of others are essential. The change from 8 goalsto proposed 17 goals is drastic. After, completing Homework 7 and assuming I was being and living a sustainablelifestyle, I learned that I can still make changes that will help myenvironment, my finances, and my livability. If I can realize that I can makechanges in my daily life, then it is important for companies to also realize, that more can be done to be more sustainable. Sustainability is ever-changingand companies need to realize that there is still work that needs to be done tobe more sustainable. The United Nations are able collective create developmentgoals that will benefit countries, communities, and companies.

Companies will save money fromefficient use of resources and processes. Their product quality will advanceand become more reliable.  The solutionsfor sustainability in the pharmaceutical and life science industries can makebusiness more sustainable because they will have started to understand thetriple bottom line like safeguard the environment, create healthier lifestyles, and increase their capital.  Together, these areas will largely dictate the shape and size of the environmentalfootprint for tomorrow’s future of medications.
