There are tons of music genres. Music is a huge part of life and everyone hears music at some point in their life. Some music genres are liked way more than others. Some have grown old, and some gaining popularity. Some will always be remembered for the impact it gave to music. Along with music, there are artists and bands.

I will be talking about 10 bands/artists, their genre they are a part of, how they started, how they influenced music and more. The first artist is Muddy Waters. Muddy Waters played a huge role in Blues. Muddy Waters grew up with Blues which led him to becoming a Blues artist. Muddy Waters first recorded with Alan Lomax which helped him gain more popularity. In 1943, he moved to Chicago to play in clubs around the city.

A record deal closely followed, and hits like “I’m your Hoochie Coochie Man” and “Rollin’ Stone” made him an iconic Blues man. Muddy Waters great experiences with Blues helped lead to artists like Elvis Presley, opening more doors to rock and roll. Blues led to early rock and roll. The most iconic person in early rock and roll was Elvis Presley. Along with most artists starting out, Elvis was very poor at a young age. His parents were big into Church which Elvis got really into the Gospel music and played a huge roll in his music later.

Elvis received his first guitar as a gift from his mother for his 11th birthday. Elvis worked numerous jobs to to pursue his music career. Eventually he got his first demo record at Sun Studio where Sam Phillips took Elvis under his wing. This led to Elvis touring and recording.

Elvis started gaining a huge fan base due to his unusual musical sound. Elvis’s first number one hit was “Heartbreak Hotel”. I chose Elvis Presley because his whole story is fascinating to me. In all his popularity, he was drafted into the army so he had to quit all he was doing and serve. After that, he eventually gained all huge popularity again. His mother ended up dying and he seemed to of persevered through that even though he did almost everything for his mother. It just stinks that he wasn’t able to stick around dying at only the age of 42.

His unusual style of music led to more artists and a new style of music folk rock. Bob Dylan was a huge artist in folk rock. At a young age Dylan gained an interest in music.

In college Dylan began performing folk and country songs. His outstanding performance, gained him his first recording contract in 1961, where he emerged as one of the most original and influential in American music. Two of Bob Dylan’s most memorable songs are “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall”. His album The Times They Are A-Changin’ established his brilliance in songwriting. I chose Bob Dylan because I think he was the best folk rock artists and his songs like “Blowin’ in the Wind” were really good.

Bob Dylan, gained huge popularity and influenced many bands and artists. Metallica was a big heavy metal band. The  musical style and talent of Metallica helped shape the musical genre. Their songwriting ability was really talented, creating songs that instantly became hits.

Metallica was the first band to have 5 consecutive studio albums debut at number one in the history of the Billboard 200. Metallica continued to grow and influenced many other heavy metal bands. They had a huge impact with their musical style and talent.   Folk rock then led to the genre glam rock. David Bowie was a well known glam rock artist. David Bowie, at a young age learned to play the saxophone. After graduating high school at age 16, David began working as a commercial artist. David’s first hit was “Space Oddity” in 1969.

David Bowie quickly gained fame and began influencing many artists. He was well known for his outrageous outfits and personality. He constantly was changing his style. David Bowie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.James Brown influenced the funk music greatly. At a young age Brown grew up with a poor family. Growing up in the Great Depression, cause James Brown to work small odd jobs for pennies.

At age 12, Brown was dismissed from school due to insufficient clothing. Brown decided to to work the odd jobs full time. To get away from the harsh life growing up being Black in the south, Brown turned to religion where he joined the church choir and grew to develop his powerful and unique voice.

James later got recorded by King Records, which was the start of his music career. James gained huge popularity. His unique vocal and musical style influenced many artists. James Brown, known as the “Godfather of Soul” is one of the most iconic figures in funk and soul music.Diana Ross is a well known artist in disco music. As a teen, Diana began singing with friends and eventually created the group, the Supremes. The Supremes were very influential.

They were the first group to have 5 no. 1 songs in a row, with songs like, “Where Did Our Love Go?” and “Baby Love”. Diana later left the group in 1969 for a solo career. This gained her even more popularity and put her even more in the spotlight. Later Diana went on to acting as well. Throughout Diana Ross’s career, Diana influenced many people in disco help other artists grow.

A huge punk group is the band Green Day. The three main people in the band starting out were Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool. All three people were big into music at a young age. They grew up with music causing them to all want to pursue it. At a young age, they also had their struggles, like Billie. At age 12 hs father passed away from cancer. In middle school, Billie met Mike, where they created a close bond. Later they brought Tre into the group where they created a band.

This was the start of Green Day. After numerous attempts, they finally got their break. They finally got their first big gig.

They then met Larry Livermore, with lookout records. Larry was very intrigued by their musical talent. The band started to gain huge popularity, filling venues. Major record companies began seeing them and eventually Green Day landed a deal with Reprise records. Green Day was a huge success. They helped shape punk and became a huge influential band.

Grunge music was greatly influenced by Nirvana. Nirvana took over grunge. Few bands in history have had such an immediate impact on music like Nirvana.

All the people in the band had bad lives before joining the band, just like most people of this time. With this, the band came together, forming one of the greatest bands in history. Nirvana blew up quick. This was shortly lived though, in 1994, Cobain, the main singer and band creator, took his own life.

He had depression, and drug addictions. Nirvana’s first album was Bleach in 1989. Nirvana became a huge hit with more and more albums coming out, knocking off artists/bands like Michael Jackson, U2, and Garth Brooks. Nirvana played a huge roll in grunge music and influenced other bands and artists to strive to be as talented as the band.Eminem is one of the most influential rap artists in the early 21st century.

At a young age it was very difficult for Eminem. He never grew up with his father and his mother couldn’t keep a job for longer than a few months. This caused for them to always be moving. Eminem says the most difficult part was moving to different schools 2 to 3 times a year. He had no close friends which caused him to always keep to himself. After failing 9th grade 3 times, Eminem dropped out of high school at age 17.

With all his anger, Eminem began putting his anger in to the rising genre hip hop where he was able to release his emotions through the music. Eminem was one of the first white rappers. He began rapping and proved to be highly skilled in it. He realized that he may not be better than anyone but he sure knew that he was better at rapping than almost everyone.

Eminem quickly became a huge hit and gained a big following. Eminem grew to be a huge rapper and influenced many rappers to come. Throughout the history of music. There have been many music genres. All these music genres influence each other and build off each other. The variety of music also wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for all these influential artists and bands above. Music will be around forever and who knows what will be next.

I think pop and rap will just continue to get bigger and bigger. It will continue to grow and hopefully get better. Music is a huge part of life.
