African Village

African Village, or better known as Africville, was constructed by and sheltered African settlers. Since 1749, the founding of Halifax, till the mid 1960’s, this small Black community existed. Seeking freedom and land, these hope filled settlers came to Canada. However, upon entering they were viewed as a lesser, an inferior. Thus being pushed away a couple kilometers to the land by Bedford Basin. Despite this racism, Africville was a strong community filled with passionate people.
The effects of poverty ran throughout this town. These people paid their taxes, yet nothing was shown for their money. Their town began where the pavement ended. Multiple times they ask the city for basic services such as plumbing, garbage disposal, and access to clean water.
