Beowulf was the bravest, strongest, best of the Geats. Beowulf exemplified many qualities of an epic hero. He showed that he would perform brave deeds, that he would risk death for the greater good of society, and that he has ethics. Beowulf showed many qualities during the battle against Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon. He also showed the qualities in previous battles; when he chained five great giants, and when he was swimming and he fought monsters in the ocean.
How did Beowulf defeat these monsters? He used all of the characteristics and fought the monsters. One of the characteristics was that he had superhuman strength. When he fought Grendel he never used a sword, he wanted a fair fight. If Grendel didn’t use a weapon he wouldn’t either. As the fight progressed Beowulf’s strength started to drain Grendel, and Beowulf noticed it. When Grendel tries to escape from Beowulf and run out the door Beowulf used his strength to rip/break Grendel’s arm off.
