Descartes was looking for a secure fundamental of certain knowledge and that he could use either for philosophy or science. The Cartesian method of doubt is a method that leads to the right and undoubted knowledge. The doubts that are listed on Descartes method are the sensible doubt, the dream doubt and the metaphysical doubt. The sensible doubt is the one that lead us to not trust a hundred percent in ours senses and everything we learn throughout them. The dream doubt is the one that show us that we cannot be sure if we are awake or dreaming in that moment. What I have learned reading about Descartes is that he was not a crazy guy, lunatic suffering of obsessive thinking, but a philosopher that used the doubt as a weapon on his journey through the knowledge. Reading about Descartes and his methods I learned there are tons types of knowledge, but the most important thing is to not trust a hundred percent in all knowledge that is pass to us and that we need to question them (pag95, paragraph 5).
Descartes experiment with the piece of wax to show what is concept in his spirit about this body. Descartes shows the wax and make experiments with the materials and substances present in the wax. Itself the wax continues to be only a wax. Descartes admits that what remained to him in his spirit is the same wax: “Must be admitted that it remains, and nobody can deny. Certainty it cannot be absolutely anything of all that is observed through the senses to all the things that fallen to the aesthetic taste or smell or the vision or the touch or the hearing are changed, and the wax keep standing still. Descartes conclude that his senses realized in a different form, but there is something that remains the same, therefore what remains of that body is the same wax. (page 176, paragraph 3).
What I have learned after reading Descartes is that he would apply to all corporeal bodies of the type of wax the same understanding, saving true men in the second situation: when he sees them through the window he understands that they are true men only by the power to judge that he resides in his spirit. Also learned that the only element which differentiates the body from bodily nature from the wax-piece of the body of corporeal nature of true men, is the power of critical thinking.
About knowledge I learned that we do not have hundred percent sure about anything, that we need to doubt about everything people say because even our senses lie to us and the act of questioning that brought and made the world what It is now. The world is moved through out questions and visionary’s like Descartes that doubt and realized that the method of questioning things was the best way to find different answers and create critical thinking because if everyone had the same thoughts there would be no advance on the society nor even on scientific discoveries.
