Analysis (Problem)

Most often teenage boy’s rooms are disorderly, and this may be due to lack of space or incompatible storage. For example there is no storage for game consoles, iPods, PSPs and many more. Regularly there is storage for CD’s and DVD’s, but in some cases their rooms become cluttered and untidy due to wires all over the place because of lack of storage for game consoles and so on. Also things such as DVD players also become space consuming. Especially with teenagers becoming more demanding for more products, that requires space. Also too many objects such as DVD players game consoles are confined within each other, therefore creating wires clutter, which is firstly dangerous and secondly unattractive.


I’m aim to design a storage unit for teenage boys. I believe this is the solution because there is such a demanding market for game console, TV’s and many more screen based media, and so this design will generate sales. This product should mainly appeal 14-19 year old males. Its main objectives are to save space; therefore it will only be big enough for it to meet its purposes, further more it will create a safer environment to live in. This product will be attractive and ergonomic.



It must appeal to the user group. As that will be the target market. Because it should appeal to the user it should look modern and stylish, as the user is 14-19.


I will curve and smooth all edges and surfaces so it will be much easier and better to hold and carry when or if needed.


I will only use woodworking machines that I have been trained to use properly and safely. Always wear safety glasses or goggles. Wear dust masks when required.


I will sand, curve and smooth all edges and surfaces to prevent and splinters to the user.


I will aim to design a storage unit, mainly for teenage boys from 14-19. It will store a variety of screen based media for example PSP’s or an iPod. It will be designed for the purpose to save space.

I will hope to make my product with either MDF or pine.


I will finish my product with a dark blue.


It must be affordable to the user group, so it will be around £10-£15.

Common Uses



Creamy white to light brown heartwood, light sapwood.

Very hard, excellent shock resistance.

Eastern white pine

One of the few types of softwood produced like hardwood lumber (random width and length), it has been often called “God’s gift to the woodworker” due to its diverse properties and uses.

Red oak


Pinkish red to blonde in colour.

Very hard and strong.

Openly porous and with dramatic grain patterns. Like White Oak, it is offered in Quartered and Rift grains also.

Due to porous nature it will soak up stains but also offers a wide variety of finish tones.

This is probably the most popular hardwood used in modern woodworking. Broad grains give this a pronounced appearance.

Workshop Diary

Step 1:

Firstly I measure what I was going to take out, as I was making housing joint, and to ensure that I made my measurements as accurate as possible the equipment I used was the carpenter’s tri-square and obviously a ruler and a pencil. After I had made the measurements I a tenon saw to cut half way down into the piece of wood however keeping safe I used a vice to do so. Following that I used a mallet hammer and a chisel to chip away some of the wood. I then continue on to file down the chipped surface, until it’s smooth and flat.

Step 2:

I simply cut all the pieces so they were could all be correctly fitted together. I used a tenon saw and a jig saw. I used the jig saw because it was faster than a tenon saw, however I had to use the tenon saw after to crop the edges.

Step 3:

I then used a sand belt and a file to make all the edges completely even. Basically using the same concept as the jig saw and the tenon saw, I used the sand belt because it was faster and then used the file to crop down the edges.

Step 4:

Using the same concept as the sand belt and the file and the jig saw and the tenon, I used the electric sander on all the surfaces, and curve the edges for safety reason stated earlier. Then I use sand paper for hard to reach places such as inside corners.

Step 5:

At this point all the pieces have been cut, filed and sanded in the purpose of making them all fit together. I had started by gluing the pieces together, and clamping the over night. Once the glue has dried I went on to nail all the pieces together, to ensure that my product won’t fall apart.

Step 6:

I painted the first layer of my product, however I only painted the inside of the product as it is the hardest to paint. And then wait for it to dry.

Step 7:

I painted the second layer of the inside of my product. I wasn’t going to start painting the outside of my product because there was no sense as it was the end of the lesson.

Step 8:

Today I began to paint the first layer of my product; this time I painted the outside of the product. And then wait for it to dry. I painted the second layer of the outside of my product. I was able to do this because I stayed after school to do so.

Industrial Practices

In Industry

To make my iPod, Playstation 2 and PSP holder I would use a process that involves jigs and moulds. This is the fastest, most efficient and accurate process of production. And of course this process will be the same for every holder; this guarantees that every holder would exactly identical, unless there is something wrong with either the jigs or the moulds.


CAM is Computer Aided Manufacture and CAD is Computer Aided Design. In this case I would use something such as pro desktop or another piece of software that allows 3D design. This would make the process quicker and easier as every single measurement will be accurate to a tenth of a millimetre. This makes it even easier for product designers as the can change any aspect of the product without having to do it separately after the process had finished, which would therefore not guarantee each product being identical.

Batch Production

My product will be produced in batches this would save costs of production, which results in more profit.

Quality Assurance

After each stage workers would be situated (in a safe environment) at a position where the each stage will be checked for any faults.

Quality Control

To also ensure quality is of high standard I would have quality control stations along the production line.


MDF tends to be inexpensive because in essence it’s recycled so it comes at a low cost.


My product will take up to two hours to complete in industry, this is because I have two different colours, and to ensure that the colours won’t mix, there will be a need to delay, as well as there having to be two layers of paint on each surface.



It appeals to the user group because it looks modern and stylish, as the user is 14-16.

I met the function of the product because it serves its purpose of providing space and storing multiple of electronic items such as the PSP and iPod and a Playstation 2.


Using the electrical sander on all the surfaces, I and curved all the edges. Then I use sand paper for hard to reach places such as inside corners.


I made my product out of MDF, it’s cheap and it is a recycled wood.


I finished my product with a dark blue and a deep red.


I think it has been suitably made, although I could have made more attempts to stay after school and pay more attention to detail. There were a couple of faults such as the paint type. When I was buying paint I unintentionally bought the incorrect paint.

Materials used

MDF, I thought this was the most suitable material to use and provides a good finish.

Life of product

MDF is able to recycle. As well as that it can last for a couple of years.

Market potential

I think if my product is properly advertised, its market potential will increase. If not advertised properly I don’t think any product will have potential.

Safety and Control

Safety Precautions

Wear safety goggles or glasses

Tuck your tie into your shirt

What happens if you don’t follow safety precautions?

If you don’t wear safety goggles and you using the sand belt saw dust can easily get into your eye. If saw dust does get in to your eye, it will cause irritations and depending on the quantity of saw dust in your eye you may even need surgery.

Tucking in your shirt as well as always using an apron is extremely important, especially when using the electrical drill. If you tie is caught in the drill you will be pulled in towards it, which has serious consequences.

Wearing a face mask isn’t as threatening. Its just prevents saw dust getting into your mouth. If saw dust does get into your mouth, it’s not life threatening, but it will cause irritations.

Leaving your shoelaces untied can be extremely dangerous. Take for instance your walking to the tools cabinet and someone walking towards you is holding a sharp object and you trip over your shoelaces. Not a situation you necessarily want to be in.

Not putting the safety guard in place or tying you hair back has the same consequences as not tucking your shirt, or not using an apron, or not tucking your tie in you shirt.

If I’m using glue gun and I accidentally get some on my hand, it will be without a doubt quite painful. That’s why I would use gloves when using a glue gun.
