Sandhya IS discussion 1: As everyone knows, Information Systems (IS) includes collection ofthe processes, standards and tools which are focused on creating, storing andprocessing the information in human readable forms such as reports, charts and dashboardsto help the businesses understand the data and make better and effectivedecisions.

As author in Article 1 mentioned, Information systems won’t justinclude data base and computer programs, this (IS) also includes humans andprocesses designed to capture, process, distribute and analyze the data.  Over the past 50+ years, Information systems field has evolvedrapidly, IS field has seen significant growth from time to time. As the per thechanging and increasing market needs, research on this area also dramaticallyincreased.  As everyone knows, Information Systems (IS) includes collection ofthe processes, standards and tools which are focused on creating, storing andprocessing the information in human readable forms such as reports, charts anddashboards to help the businesses understand the data and make better andeffective decisions.

As author in Article 1 mentioned, Information systemswon’t just include data base and computer programs, this (IS) also includeshumans and processes designed to capture, process, distribute and analyze thedata. Evolution and Trends: As per my understanding, each decadein last five decades mainly focused on solving atleast one primary challenge.Following shows my understanding of what each decade focus has been and whatwas the outcome: 1950 – 1960: In this decade, main focus was on transactional dataprocessing which in real life used to cash checks, automated teller machines,accounting systems, orders and deposits etc.

. 1960 – 1970:  Thisera focused on developing applications which helps business people to make thedecisions by understanding the processed data. So focus shifted completely fromdeveloping basic simple automated processes to utilize predefined informationeffectively.  Additionally, thefirst business computer has seen the world in this decade. 1970 – 1980: In this era, personal computers (PC)  were introduced. But as perincreasing needs, predefine reporting was not good enough to help thebusinesses to make the decisions, so new concept called Decision Support System(DSS) was evolved to support business users with interactive decision makingprocesses.

 1980 – 1990: This era has seen personal computing, most companiespurchased their own software and hardware as per their needs. There was n’tmuch change in technology growth but usage has been increased. 1990 – 2000: This decade has seen significant shift in informationsystem technology usage and so the business environment. Many industries haveseen positive impact of new ways of communications and various ways of runningbusiness which was cumbersome earlier. Outcomes include Artificialintelligence, knowledge management systems (intranet, Helpdesk), Expert Systemsetc. 2000 – Current: Significant growth of internet usage rapidly changedthe capabilities in business with the help of Information Systems.

Web based,mobile based applications are being used by businesses extensively.  As per my research and understanding, based on the way informationsystems have emerged, automating on demand things seem to be driving point.Many organizations focus on automating as much as possible to save the time,money and resources, machine learning could help achieve this. Consideringthese, I think the next trends could be based on Artificial Intelligence ormachine learning, Internet of things (IoT) and Big Data.
