Ever since the 1920s people have been conducting experiments to create autonomous cars. The first self-sufficient and true smart car appeared in the 1980s. Mercedes “VaMoRs” was one of the first autonomous cars invented; it drove itself by moving into lanes with metal conductors then followed along those conductors (Weber). Autonomous cars are becoming very popular in today’s society. An autonomous car is a vehicle that can guide itself with or without human interaction. This kind of vehicle has become a concrete reality and may pave the way for future systems where computers take over the art of driving (Technopedia) . For example, who wouldn’t want a car that drives itself, especially on those long road trips that everyone dreads to drive? Now that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is at a level far beyond what people actually comprehend, autonomous cars can actually save someone’s time and effort and help drive them to their destination. However, AI doesn’t have a human’s instant reaction to a scenario that can happen. Now that car manufactures are advancing by putting new technologies that will make cars far more functional and smart than they are now upgrading technologies such as touch screen display, Wi-Fi, navigation systems, self-driving capabilities, etc. In spite of the fact that these systems can unequivocally improve the driving experience, these features are also too distracting for drivers, and make roads even more dangerous.
In the struggle for providing more and more features with friendly user experience, the user interaction inside the car could become more distracting. No matter how the vehicle looks the primary task of driving should never be placed out of focus. Features, such as these: touch screen display, in car navigation and Wi-Fi, are highly likely to decrease the driver’s attention to the environment and his or her focus on the driving. With this in mind, being distracted with additional tasks which are not related to driving is the main reason for the car accidents. Distracted driving is dangerous, claiming 3,450 lives in 2016 alone. National highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA) leads the national effort to save lives by preventing this dangerous behavior. Thus, it is crucial to consider reducing the driver distraction while developing user interfaces for the human-car interaction. Distracted drivers leads to many car crashes some killing people and most seriously injuring the other drivers. More than 391,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers in 2015 and these distracted drivers were either messing with the radio or they were on their cell phones (NHTSA).
With these actions taken by these distracted drivers this also sheds light on the AI technologies that have influenced the in-car environment as well as prospects to support the design process of different automotive user interaction. There are ways to diminish driver distractions, but to focus on the two to prevent these accidents are the following. One of the ways is to improve the already existing in-car interaction design but not change the basic features in driving. The second way is to provide self-driving in terms of making the driving task easier, more automated and safer but also have the driver active in driving. The first one serves the basis for designs inside the car today by putting in new features and making the car more appealing but the technology that is added in the vehicle should not distract the driver. The second one puts the question at what amount the driver should get assistance, and have the drivers hands on the steering wheel at all times. With these new autonomous cars drivers will become too relaxed and let the vehicle do the driving while the driver rest or do others things. So, to support the discussion, the types of interaction and their use while driving were considered in more details.
In conclusion, driver distraction is growing, and the number of accidents is also increasing due to drivers being distracted with the technologies within the vehicle. Distraction in the smart car and the devices could grow even more in the future the more technology advances. Providing increase of comfort can lead to dangerous safety concerns due to the driver getting too comfortable. The current state of technology is focused on the design. Lastly, in order to compete with other companies’ people cannot change the basic features that are already in the vehicle. But people can try to make driving a bit safer by improving the in-car user interaction such as putting sensors on the steering wheel so there is someone still in control of the vehicle even though the vehicle is driving itself.
