Families fail in the socialisation of children Evaluate the arguments for and against this statement Essay

Socialisation is important is the learning process which refers to all the different ways in which a person learns how they should behave and act in society. The family is a childs first social group and the family is where primary socialisation takes place, which is where the earliest learning takes place. Family also introduces children to all the other agents of socialisation such as the mass media and peer groups.

nbsp;Families often do a great job in the socialization due to the fact they are around their child for the first few years of their life, but in some ways families can fail at the socialization of children. Families often fail at socialization for many reasons, because without noticing it, they may be teaching children stereotypical gender roles, because when children are older they may assume that men and women should act a certain way, which could deny them of future opportunities. For example, a young girl might live in a family where typical gender roles are present and might see their mum working the kitchen a lot and their dad go out to work and might socialize children into growing up assuming this is how male and female roles should be and might decide not to go to university, because they think they should work at home and its normal to stay and work at home like their mother, because thats what they have grown up and are used to seeing happen. The same goes for a boy, when they are older, a boy might feel pressurised into getting a good job and providing for their family, because that is what their dad done and thats what they are socialized into believing. And boys and girl should get the chance to live their life however they want and not being influenced to a certain way. Another way families fail at socializing their children are if their children are of certain social classes. Many children from upper class wealthier families, may be socialized into looking down on people of maybe working class or lower class families and thinking they are not equal to them.

This is wrong, because children are learning from their parents views and should be brought up to learn that all classes are equal. Also, if a child is wealthy, they might be brought up and socialized to always get the best and live a highly privileged lifestyle and as they grow up adapt to their surroundings. They might not be exposed to the bad parts of the world or maybe poorer parts of the country and maybe if they were to leave their immediate family and go to poorer parts of the country, they might not be able to handle their surroundings, because they are not used to that environment. The same goes for poorer children, because if childrens are brought up in a bad environment, with parents who are criminals or maybe are on drugs. They might not learn acceptable values of society and might grow up thinking drugs are not that bad or it is ok to steal, because their parents have brought them up maybe getting them to steal or stealing themselves. This might lead to them getting in trouble in later life or becoming criminals themselves. Although families may fail at socialization, they are also good at it in some ways. They teach children social norms and values of society.

In our society, we have a number of norms that are basically unwritten rules that everybody should obey. For example, in our society many norms are to respect you elders, to wear clothes when out in public and even small things like to queue up in  a supermarket. Families teach us many norms, such as having manners and saying please and thank you and basically everyday things, like if you were to walk around the street swearing or naked, people would find that a bit strange and probably be angry, because that is not seen as the norm in our society.Parents will teach children good behaviour and how to behave appropriately in certain situations. Different places and different cultures have different norms, but having a family around you, will help you conform to the norms of the society that you live in. Without having people around us to teach us norms, such as family, then children would not know how to act appropriately and would probably not fit in with the rest of society.  Reasons why parents dont fail in  the socialisation of children is, because to help children conform to the norms, parents will teach them negative sanctions, which are punishments used to prevent unacceptable behaviour. If discipline and negative sanctions are used correctly, then it helps children to understand what is right and wrong, because they know that if they do something bad, then they will be punished.

Many negative sanctions include, being told off, maybe being sent to their room or being smacked.Parents using negative sanctions appropriately against children when they are younger can help socialize them into a well behaved person when they are older, because children will know from when they are younger what is right and wrong from what their parents have taught them. For example, if a child maybe hurts their younger sister with a toy, their parent might take the toy off the child as a punishment to show them that is not the right way to behave and this can contribute to a child being well behaved or even bad behaved later on in life.  Parents are also good a socializing children through positive sanctions. These are the opposite of negative sanctions and this is when children are rewarded for doing something good. This is good for socializing children, because if when a child was younger they were rewarded with a marshmallow for maybe learning their alphabet they could learn that its good to work hard and learn their alphabet and when theyre older they might know that working hard in school is a good thing and they might even be rewarded, because of the positive sanctions they received when younger.

nbsp; Another reason why parents are good in the socialization of children is that they will teach children societys values. These are guidelines or ideas, they refer to what is seen as correct behaviour and moral issues, like what is right and wrong and also what is seen worthwhile and what people value in society. Parents teach children simple things, such as lying is bad and when they are slightly older they will learn to value peoples lives and to not murder or not to steal. nbsp;Parents will also teach children the material value of things, like to look houses or expensive goods like mobile phones and to be careful with money. Children will also learn the value of love and caring for others.

Parents are good at socializing children by teaching them values, because they want their children to end up good, honest people in the future and if children are taught their societys values they will end up good people. nbsp;Parents are also good in socializing children, because they will teach us things that are vital for life and survival. They will introduce children to language, which they obviously need to communicate with others around them and will teach children what is dangerous in everyday life, sometimes without even noticing.

For example a parent might simply tell a child dont touch that hot cooker, because you will burn yourself. The child will pick these things up and then learn not to do that again and will realize why hot cooker means they will burn them self. Families will also teach children things they need for everyday life, like we need to eat to stay alive or how to hold a spoon when eating. Also, the names of things, teaching them simple words like table, chair and bed and children would not be able to survive, without their parents socializing them into knowing whats dangerous, like a hot cooker or how to talk and communicate with others, or how to eat.I disagree with the statement Families fail in the socialisation of children, because although there are a few reasons that make me agree with this statement, like many gender stereotypes are present within families and the social class of a family can sometimes socialize a child and influence them in a negative way, but I disagree with this statement, because families also help teach children what is vital for survival through socialization, like how to talk and what is dangerous.Families also teach children the values and norms of society and basically through primary socialisation, during the first few years of a childs life, in a way, families, mainly parents help shape out a childs life.
