Fear, violence, and anger brought on by racism all provide the foundation of the story “Nightwalker” by Brent Staples. Staples explains the issues or stereotypes he faces being a black man in public environments. Staples initiates his perspective by introducing the audience into thinking he is committing a crime, but reveals how the actions taken towards him are because of the fear linked to his labelled stereotypes of being rapists, gangsters and muggers. The author uses personal life experiences and vivid imagery to impose upon the reader the impact of discrimination.
By using this device, it helps draw the audience in and conncect with the argument.
