Gun Control A shooter takes down one person, then another, and eventually takes down a whole crowd of people. Is this a video game or real life? In today’s society it is hard to even tell. If the government does not take control now, large shootings will be a normal event in the United States. To be able to acquire a gun should be a fairly difficult task. With the gun laws are now, acquiring a gun is pretty much as easy as walking in and out of the store. Think about it, if somebody can walk into a gun shop, and walk out in twenty minutes or less with a pistol, how safe is that?
Background checks need to be required and highly detailed so that people who are mentally unstable can not obtain guns. When this happens, massive shootings can occur throughout the country because when these people get angry, they do some irrational things. Assault rifles and guns with large magazines also need to be banned. There is absolutely no reason to have these types of weapons available to the public. Guns with a high rate of fire are unnecessary to own because they serve no purpose. Having access to these weapons makes it easier for school shootings and other massacres to occur.
This is because of the amount of bullets that can be fired at a time without reloading. A license to carry a concealed weapon should be encouraged to people with a clear history and who are mentally stable. If more stable people have a license to carry, there is a higher chance of a shooting being prevented. For instance, if an intruder comes into a school with a weapon, and a teacher has a gun, they can potentially stop the person from causing harm to others. If this happened, it could save many lives and protect people from injury. There are many different types of guns that you can possibly obtain.
There are Assault Rifles, Sniper Rifles, Sub-Machine, Light Machine, Pistols, and Shotguns. First is the Assault Rifle. The Assault Rifle is what is used in the military and other armed forces. These guns have very large clips and have a fairly high rate of fire. These weapons should not be allowed to be owned by civilians because they are unnecessary and are normally used in massacres. The next weapon is the Sniper Rifle. These guns are used in hunting and other sport activities. This is an allowable weapon for people who pass the background and mental stability checks to own.
These guns are rarely used in massacres because of their slow rate of fire although they are used in assassinations from a long distance away. Next is the Submachine gun. The submachine gun is a weapon with a very high rate of fire and large magazine. These guns should be completely illegal for obvious reasons. Nobody goes hunting for deer with a gun that shoots one hundred bullets a second. That is just ridiculous! Along with sub-machine guns there are their counterparts, the light machine gun. These are the guns that have a moderate rate of fire but a huge magazine.
Light machine guns can shoot roughly one thousand rounds in one magazine. These, like assault rifles and submachine guns, should be banned for anything other than military combat. Then we have the pistol. Pistols are small and convenient guns that are easily concealable. They are perfect for protection with people that pass the background checks to get a license to carry. Then there is the shotgun. Shotguns are a spread shot weapon that is also used for hunting for sport. These are used for specific animals to hunt such as rabbits.
Shotguns are rarely ever used in shootings because of their large size and small range. ShotgunSubmachine gunAssault Rifle There are many different ways to obtain a gun. The first way to get a gun is at the gun shop. This is a store where they sell guns exclusively. Obtaining a gun here requires a thorough background check and usually a waiting period. The next way to get a gun is by winning it at a gun show. Pretty much anybody can win a gun with just a bit of luck. Another way to get a gun is by purchasing one at an outdoors shop such as Cabela’s. This also requires a background check and a waiting period.
Next there is Wal-Mart. This is pretty much the same as buying at a gun shop or an outdoors shop. They all require a background check but Wal-Mart does not usually have a waiting period. The last way to purchase a gun is at a gun club. These are also one of the easiest ways to get a gun. Gun clubs generally do not require any type of background checks or waiting periods. There should be the following information required to be able to purchase a gun. The first and possibly most important thing to do is a thorough background check needs to take place.
Next, there should be an age restriction where you have to be at least 18 years old. There should also be a Mental Stability test. This would give the shop/place of purchase a reasonable view on your current mental state. A waiting period of at least one week should be implied when a gun is being purchased. Finally, a weapon safety course should be required in order to buy a gun at all. There should also be restrictions on the weapons that you are allowed to purchase. First, you should not be able to buy a weapon that has a large magazine.
Large magazines are not necessary for anything except military combat and can be very dangerous in the arms of a mentally unstable person. Automatic weapons and other weapons that have the ability to shoot multiple rounds per second should also be banned. These guns are also unnecessary to the normal human in today’s society. A recent interview was done with the owner of A. F. Boyer’s in Slatington, Pennsylvania. In this interview, Boyer was asked five different gun related questions. The questions are as follows: Do you think that guns should be completely banned? Are you against the ownership of assault rifles? ; Do you believe that more people should get a license to carry? ; How has the recent gun law talk affected your business? ; Do you believe that it is currently too easy to obtain a gun? Boyer answered the first question by saying “No. ” The following question was answered the same. The next question was then answered with a “Yes. ” The question after that was answered by saying “Large increase in sales. ” The final question was answered with “At gun shows, yes. In a business like mine, no. ” Mass shootings are a very common thing in the United States.
Just recently, there has been shootings in Colorado, Connecticut, and a few weeks ago there was a bombing in Boston. Although these are very common occurring events, deaths from guns are massacre shootings. For example, a recent article states “Statistics also show that half of all firearm deaths in the U. S. are actually suicides. More guns are fired during suicides than during homicides in America. ” (Melton) This proves that not nearly all deaths from guns are committed as a crime, which goes to show that guns are not always as bad as people think.
If guns were not allowed to be owned, people would still find some way to commit suicide. When people intend to do a certain act, they will go to any length to accomplish that act. As another example, here is a statement made by Ezra Klein in the article ‘Twelve facts about guns and mass shootings in the United States’ on www. wonkblog. com “If roads were collapsing all across the United States, killing dozens of drivers, we would surely see that as a moment to talk about what we could do to keep roads from collapsing.
If terrorists were detonating bombs in port after port, you can be sure Congress would be working to upgrade the nation’s security measures. If a plague was ripping through communities, public-health officials would be working feverishly to contain it. Only with gun violence do we respond to repeated tragedies by saying that mourning is acceptable but discussing how to prevent more tragedies is not. “Too soon,” howl supporters of loose gun laws. But as others have observed, talking about how to stop mass shootings in the aftermath of a string of mass shootings isn’t “too soon”. It’s much too late. ” (Klein) Works Cited
