Another section of homeschooling is called unschooling.Unschooling children learn by having life experiences along with householdchores, nature, books, travel, family members, social interactions, etc…Unschooling encourages self-discovery and expression, they believe the more personalthe learning is the more beneficial and meaningful it is to the child. The mainreasoning behind unschooling is that children are natural learners and shouldexplore their interests rather than be confined to learn certain subjects. EducatorJohn Holt says, “The anxiety children feel at constantly being tested, theirfear of failure, punishment, and disgrace, severely reduces their ability bothto perceive and to remember…” An example of unschooling would be a child goingoutside and collecting leaves then using those leaves to learn addition orsubtraction by adding leaves and taking away leaves.
Public schools allow access to an education for every childin a community. Legally public schools are not able to turn children away basedon income, disability, or academic performance. If your child has disabilities, they either accommodate at the school or find another school that will fulfill yourchild needs. This creates an equal educational opportunity for all students nomatter their financial or personal situations. Public schools provide you with diversityamong students because they allow everyone in the community to attend. Thisexposes children to different cultures and ethnicities as well as students whohave similar or opposite learning styles from theirs. They may learn to workwith others who have mental and/or physical disabilities which will help themin the workforce later as well. Public schools offer advanced classes like (AP)and specialized courses in subjects like technology and the arts, according toEducation Bug.
Public schools offer transportation to and from school, theyalso have reduced lunch to students who qualify. Statistics show that in the spring of2007 1.5 million students were homeschooled in the United States, the studywas done by the National Household Education Surveys Program (NHES). Themajority of parents and students chose homeschooling for more than one reason. Some of the most common reasons for homeschooling is the ability to teach acertain set of values, beliefs, and to enhance family dynamics. Homeschoolingprovides a safer environment for children to learn because they don’t typicallyhave to encounter physical harm, alcohol, drugs, racism, psychological abuse, bullies, discrimination, sexual assault and harassment.
Students who switch tohomeschooling after they have been negatively impacted by school usually gain abetter focus on academics, and an overall greater state of mind. Homeschooling lessenspressure about socialization, furthermore parents are able to eliminate bulliesfrom their children’s lives and create more positive social interactions. Homeschoolstudents have more flexible schedules and aren’t as pressured with deadlineswhich leads to higher academic performance and they tend to score above averageon standardized testing. The term Homeschooling, also know ashome education, is an alternative form of learning. In which parents or a hiredtutor, teach their child at home instead of sending them to a public or privateschool.
Parents will decide on which curriculum to use and which subjects theirchild will take. A child’s education can be customized in a multitude of waysto fit his or her learning style, interests, and level. The quality ofeducation received depends on the competence of the parent. At some point inthe last two decades, homeschooling has become increasingly common as anapplicable alternative to school.
Children that are home schooled spend moretime learning and absorbing information, they have more flexible schedules andare not as easily impacted by social norms such as what type of clothes theyare wearing or outward appearance. While children in traditional school spendtheir time developing test taking, and social skills, they tend to have more ofa set schedule and worry greater about clothes, shoes, backpacks, notebookbrands etc… because they are surrounded by more diverse groups of people andtry to fit in.
