Vaccinations have very crucial onthe health of children and have a major role in reducing the number of childhoodvaccine-preventable diseases.

However, lot of the parents are concerned aboutthe accuracy and the importance of vaccines. This concern of parents leads to takevaccinations (American Academy of Pediatrics). As per the Periodic Survey ofFellows (PS#66) in 2006 75% of parents declined the vaccine and in 2013 it isincreased by 87%.

The reason behind the refusal of a vaccine is that parentsare believed that vaccines have no significance on child health and causeautism. Each vaccination is a nightmare for parents. However, studies showscontinue engagement and personal relationship with parents helps them toreceive vaccine after initially refusing them.

Nurses willingness to listen theirconcern play a major role to choose vaccination.            A lot of studies have conducted in variousplaces to find out the reason why parents are refusing vaccines? In studyparents concerned about the number of vaccines at a time, pain and fever, autism development,  the new developmentof other learning disabilities, and finally the safety and hygiene of vaccinesbefore use. In this question, the parents are concerned about 18months vaccine oftheir child. First, child health should be the primary concern of nurse, who isnot involved in the parental decision. When the child is due to receive vaccinespend more time with that family. Reassure the mother about there is no evidenceof vaccines and autism. Explain to parent sometimes the onset of autism andvaccinations are happening at same time, but it  is not caused by vaccines.

Arrange a meetingwith other parents whose children already vaccinated it will increase theirconfidence to take vaccine. In my experience, I felt that Healthcare providers(HCP’s) can influence positively on parent’s decision about vaccination throughtheir honest and respectful relationship with parents. Especially readiness tohear their various concerns about vaccination as listed above. Afteracknowledging the various concerns, take time and communicate with parentsabout the safety and importance of vaccines, and seriousness of unimmunized. The frequency, intensity, and depth of knowledge regarding vaccination aredifferent for each person.   Patient-centered care is another effective wayto treat them.

Encourage parents to ask questions this will help HCP’s toprovide more information. Nurses have an obligation to promote a safe clinicalenvironment for vaccine resistant through compassion, patience, and respect. Afterso many appointments with parents regarding immunization and still, they aredecline vaccine without nonmedical reason as a nurse you can refer them toanother HCP. Make sure parents of unvaccinated children fully aware ofcontagious diseases and symptoms. Advise them to seek medical attention ifnecessary.            In conclusion, it is important thatall parents want what is best for their children.

Effective communication helpsyou to reach your goals. Advise them to use reliable website and othereducational materials for reference that would be helpful for parents allaystheir concerns
