In this study

In this study, there will be a total of 68 participants. Participants will be undergraduate and graduate students from Psychology classes. Participants will include 34 men and 34 women, who are expected to be between the ages of 18 and 28 years old. Participants will be from any and any/all ethnic backgrounds. Participants will be randomly assigned to conditions within gender so that 34 men and 34 women will participate in each condition. During recruitment, participants will be informed that they will completing two unrelated experiments and will complete the cooperative task of a puzzle game with a partner. Once arriving at the lab’s research room, before the experiment starts, participants will complete the informed consent form. The consent form will provide a description of the purpose of the experiment being conducted and the procedure participants will follow. It will also include a statement that participants will be given additional information about the experiment after they have participated.
Materials
The experiment will require a quiet room, with a chair, a desk, and a computer. The computer should include a mouse and a keyboard for each participant in the condition. A short video a pencil and a piece of lined notebook paper will also be required. A puzzle game that will be done on a mat. A clipboard containing the observed observations and a camera will be needed. The response form will be printed on an 81/2 x 11-inch sheet of white paper. It will include the participants’ ID number.
Procedure
Participants will be given an appointment, of a certain time to come to the lab’s research room depending on the group. When each group arrives, they will be told that they will be completing several unrelated experiments, the first experiment measures visual acuity which will be a priming task. The two conditions measured are the nonconscious af?liation goal and no-goal conditions. Once arriving at the lab in the research room, participants were seated at a computer and were randomly assigned to one the goal conditions. The participants in the nonconscious af?liation goal were then primed with a series of four words; partner, togetherness, friendship, and involved. These words were related to the concept of af?liation. The four words each will appear a total of 20 times in a random order. The stimulus words for the no-goal condition will not be primed with the nonconscious af?liation goal words but rather be presented with four neutral words; single, distance, acquaintance, simple. Two words each will appear a total of 35 times in a random order. Each computer will have all the experiment instructions on the screen. Participants will read the instructions on the computer screen. The purpose of this experiment is for researchers to see how quickly and accurately participants will respond to the visual stimuli. The participants will indicate which word they noticed more when both the nonconscious af?liation goal and no-goal conditions words were flashed on the screen after briefly. Participants then use the pencil and a piece of lined notebook paper provided to write the word that they saw first.
In the next phase of this experiment, participants will interact with another participant, who will be a confederate to do a cooperative puzzle task. During this task, it is important to work together in a friendly manner. After the participants receive the instructions, the group of participants that had been primed with the words; partner, togetherness, friendship, and involved will be with a confederate who will touch his/her face throughout the activity and will smile when connecting the puzzle pieces together. While participants who were presented with the words; single, distance, acquaintance, simple will be with a confederate who will touch his/her face throughout the activity and smile when connecting the puzzle pieces together. While participants connected puzzle pieces and complete the puzzle, they will be secretly videotaped. Independent coders who will be blind to the study’s purpose and the participants’ conditions will use the clipboard and measured the observed amount of face touching that occurred from the participants.
