English 10Antigone
In the play Antigone by Sophocles it is based on fate, law, mortality and individual action. The play is about a new king named Creon and his new rule which brought all hell. When the old king, Oedipus died his two sons killed each other at battle other so the next person by blood was Creon. When Creon became king, he issued a law that Eteocles who died “fighting for his country”, would get a proper burial and Polyneices who died fighting against his native city would not get buried at all. Antigone who is Oedipus’s daughter thought that Creon was in the wrong for making a law that had to do with her brother not being able to have a proper burial so, Antigone went against that law and attempted to bury her brother. When Antigone was caught and brought to Creon by Sentry she didn’t deny anything and told Creon that she wanted to die since her brothers are dead. When Creon decided that if she wanted to die that she shouldn’t die he basically held Antigone and her sister, Ismene captive. After the town found out what happened they turned on Creon. After being imprisoned for a while Antigone took her own life by hanging herself. When Haimon found out that the love of his life took her own life he wanted to kill his father but he turned the sword to himself and took his own life. Haimon’s mother, Creon’s wife was very upset with Creon and killed herself because her son was dead. When going through all of this Haimon highlighted a lot of Creon’s Characteristics. Creon is a defiant, angry and boastful man.
Creon is a very defiant man. He doesn’t care if it is family or a close friend he will not forgive anyone for doing something that he has forbidden from doing. Haimon states, “When men speak well, it is good to learn from them” (Line 819). When Creon refuses to listen to his own sons reasoning it is showing how defiant he is being compared to his son’s cooperativeness. Not only does Creon refuse to listen to Haimon but he refuses to listen to majority of the town. When Creon is not paying attention to not only his son but majority of the town it brings out his defiantness and unreasonableness.
Creon is an angry person. He shows this throughout the play but he mostly shows this when Haimon starts to question him and judge the way that he has chosen to act as king. Creon asked, “Am I to rule this land at someone else’s whim or by myself?” (Line 838). Creon gets angry when Haimon starts doubting Creon’s rules. When Haimon is questioning his father’s act of being king, Haimon gets upset. When Creon gets upset it is not only showing his son how he acts but it is showing the town as well.
Creon is a boastful person and Haimon brings that out well. Creon asked, “And the City proposes to teach me how to rule?” When Creon says this, this does not make him look like a good person. Creon thinks that he is better than everyone and that he shall be the one making every decision and that no one can teach him how to do his job. When Creon is talking with Haimon and says this, Haimon is highlighting how boastful Creon can be.

When he acts as if he is better than everyone it makes him look bad. Haimon is a calm person and he doesn’t flip out when his father is arguing with him.
