In the movie “The ghost of Millponds” are multiple examples of why It Illustrates our key concepts of unit 1. Firstly the movie went down in an era when there was extreme discrimination against any “colored” people therefore creating a “black vs.. Whites” main plot which we studied in class. Through out the movie you can also see that the actions of one man can change or make a dent in an important issue, similar to the individuals we studied In class.
Aristotle said a long time ago, “Law is made to pep the people who are Ill minded away from their Intentions, and without law everyone would do whatever they want and can get way with It” which Is exactly what happen in the movie when Mr.. Byron De La Backbite thought he was on top of the law, the key study of The Theory of Law has direct link to the movie. Back in the 1 sass, was when the movie was taking place. During that time era, it is known to us that there was lots of racism and discrimination against “colored” people.
This true story speaks to us about how an elderly black woman fights versus he white lawyers and Judges to serve Justice to the man who killed her husband. In class we studied how the law is blind to some in the legal system, one of the lessons that we studied that includes blindness in the law was the “whites vs.. Blacks”, where the whites would stand a higher ground than the blacks and could get away with something terrible such as murder. This is what happens in the movie and even though fighting for it took 27 years Miss.
Veers finally got some peace at mind knolling she put the bad man In Jail. Without this blindness, there shouldn’t have been 27 years of fighting an countless amounts of hours could have been placed In other cases much needed help. To conclude, the “white vs.. Blacks” issue was a key concept in unit 1 that was represented during the movie. Richard Suave who went against the government for the right to vote while in prison, made a significant change that no one thought one man can do. Bobby one the those men who made a change or dent Into the big discrimination problem with the Veers case.
He stood up for what he wanted at heart and followed It to the end while everyone Including his wife was against him. In our class we studied the individuals who changed the law with their passion and their drive to change. As mentioned earlier, Richard Suave fought the government while still in jail for what he believed was right, and although he didn’t achieve exactly what he wanted, there was still an eye opener to Judge and other high up politicians, and therefore created on the subject.
Aristotle being 2300 years old, was a wise man who predicted what would happen f anyone who thought they where above the law would do. In this case, Mr.. Byron De La Backbite had very high hopes of getting away with murder, and even if he did the first time, the second time it came and hit him right in the head. Being from that time, the murderer had lost all sense of his thoughts, and even if law is placed to keep those kind of people on a leash, there was a loop in the system that allowed him to carry on with his mall Intentions.
We studied this theory of law In class and It was Therefore the ties between the movie and our unit 1 where obvious, they where shown throughout the whole movie. The first being the continuing “whites vs.. Black” struggle, where black people fell short to whites in every aspect on a day to day life in the movie. Then we looked at the individual actions of one man and how they can change the future with their passion to achieve what they want. And lastly we saw how law keeps people like Mr.. Byron De La Backbite on leash and once that leash breaks they lose all control.
