Michael Jackson showed evidence of Body Dysmorphic Disorder due to the significant impairment that his idealizations caused on his personal life. Since an early age Michael was exposed to “taunting by his father, calling him ‘Big Nose’” which caused continuous issues with his self-image (Rich). In 1979, Michael also broke his nose when in rehearsal. Complications with a rhinoplasty while correcting the fracture made it difficult for Michael breath. This resulted in Michael receiving another rhinoplasty to fix the problem.
Several surgeons have speculated that Jackson had undergone multiple nasal surgeries, a forehead lift, thinned lips and a cheekbone surgery (Rich). Also due vitiligo, a deterioration of the pigment in the skin, Michael develop a low self-image of himself (Rich). He even stated in a 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey that his father used to tell him how ugly he was and that he didn’t like looking in the mirror because he would never be happy with how he looked (Michael Jackson Talks To Oprah Full Interview). Many health professionals have also “publicly stated their belief that the singer had body dysmorphic disorder”. Rich) Michael has also suffered from Anorexia Nervosa. Those that were close to the singer said that he was often dizzy. There was also had a period of time in the early 80’s where Jackson lost a significant amount of weight do to his lust after “a dancer’s body” (Rich). This period of significant weight loss seemed to become a trend and problem later on for Michael. According to his autopsy, Michael only weighed 112 at the time of his death (Levy). These factors all contribute to make Anorexia Nervosa an evident issue that Jackson faced. Michael suffered from a Substance Dependence Problem.
Early in his life Michael used painkillers, Valium, Xanax and Ativan to deal with the stress that the media. But by “the fall of 1993”, he was addicted to and dependent on these very same medications (Rich). His death was also revealed his substance dependence. According to a witness account “Michael Jackson craved propofol an demonstrated drug seeking behavior” (Levy). In order to receive the propofol that he needed, Michael would even visit multiple doctor in order to get what he wanted. Traces of propofol were also found in Michael’s toxicology report as well (Levy).
Due to extremely traumatic events in his early life , Michael suffers from moderate Major Depressive Disorder. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey he spoke about how he was “frightened” of his father and even vomit at the thought of father coming to see him. Michaels father would also make him undergo grueling rehearsals filled with name calling and whipping whenever he didn’t perform perfectly. He would often cry of loneliness starting at around the age six because he felt that he lost his childhood once he becomes famous (Michael Jackson Talks To Oprah Full Interview).
Having a full time job as a child didn’t allow Michael to make friends, create relationships, use their imaginations as child need to when developing. When speaking to Oprah Winfrey in an interview Michael expressed how he went threw a 14-year period, where he felt he had nothing important to say and went into self-isolation. This is due to the abuse Michael had earlier in life. (Rich). Michael showed signs of being Schizotypal. He was always over the top in his ideas as well as how he expressed himself.
Jackson even bought and befriended a pet chimpanzee called Bubbles in what was reportedly “an act which extended his eccentric persona” (Rich). It was evident of his interview with Oprah Winfrey of this in the way the Michael dresses and speaks. There was also a lack of close relationship in Michael’s life, which contributes to the belief that he is Schizotypal. Obsessive Personality Disorder is another issue that Michael dealt with. He even admits to being a “perfectionist” and that nothing seemed to ever be right (Michael Jackson Talks To Oprah Full Interview).
Michael obsessed over his work to make sure that every detail of his performance was perfect in the way that he wanted. The singer was also extremely dedicated to his work. Ethics and values are also important to Michael when it comes to how he lives his life. Other than the vitiligo previously stated, Michael had few other medical issues at the time of his death. Michael also in 1986 fell victim to systemic lupus erythematosus. This is a very serious and potentially life threatening disease (Rich). When globally assessing Michael’s functional level, I found him as a 68.
This is because at the time of death Michael was still working and extremely busy. He demonstrated mild symptoms to the public and was able to function in a day life extremely well. But, Michael as stated that his depression has caused him to go into self-isolation which has caused issues when it comes to his work life (Rich). He also has a few close friends at the time of his death that helps demonstrate how well he was able to function. Even though Michael has quite a few problems in his personal life, he was still as well functioning and extremely successful individual.
