“The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins
Death Arena
I picked The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is for my book report because it is suspenseful, adventurous, and has tons of action. This novel is about Katniss, Peeta, Haymitch, Effie, and the Games. The setting in The Hunger Games is not in the past or present, but in the future. The story takes place in District 12 and in a place called the Arena. This novel tells a great story and will keep readers entertained and interested from the beginning to the end of the book.
The Hunger Games are literally a fight to death in which each of the 12 districts sends two tributes, one male and one female. Being entered into the Games means either fortune and fame or unavoidable death. In District 12, Katniss Everdeen volunteered for her little sister Prim when she got chosen. And the male tribute was Peeta Mellark, a baker’s son. Katniss knew Peeta when he throw a piece of bread to her when it was raining. In the beginning, the book takes place in District 12. District 12 is where coal is mined, and therefore, it is described as having a layer of soot and coal dust over most things. It also said that District 12 is where modern-day Appalachia is. Most of the book takes place at the arena in which the Hunger Games are in a different arena. This year, the Games take place in an arena in which there is a lake, streams, wooded areas, and a field in which Katniss and almost all of the other tributes are afraid to enter. After many hardships and suffering from the harsh environment and the rivals of other districts, the two tributes from District 12 are the survivors and the winners of the year.
The turning point, or climax, of the story is when they go into the games and she runs off with a backpack and meets Rue, a little 12 year old girl who was Katniss’s friend in the Hunger Games. She was killed and Katniss sang to her until she died. Peeta was almost killed by Cato but he ran far away and camouflaged with rocks and water. They announced that two victors could win so Katniss had to find Peeta. She found him and cared for him but he was very sick. They grew very close together and lived in a cave together. Katniss got some medicine and it helped treat him. One conflict is she wants to keep Peeta alive and goes through so much trouble. She had to go and find the backpack with the medicine before the other people got to it. They faced a big battle with all the remaining people and they conquered them. But, then at the last moment the announcers said there could only be one Victor and they were in shock. They loved each other too much to kill the other. They came up with a plan to both stick poisonous berries in their mouths and after they hurried and announced they both won they spit them out. That is how they won the Hunger Games.
I loved this book so much because in the book, the action is so much and exciting with so much amazing detail and description. This is one of my favorite books ever. I think when you read it, you don’t want to put it down and it makes you feel like you are with the characters in the book and you know them so well. I recommend this book to anyone who can read at this level because it is full of suspense, action, and it is rather interesting.
