Neglect is starting to become a lot more common than recent years and neglect on a child has a huge effect on their development. If a child is neglected at an early age they will tend to lack confidence and have a low self-esteem due to the emotional abuse caused by the parents neglect towards the child. This will then form problems for a child to maintain friendships and relationships due to the lack of trust they received from their caregiver because they have never managed to have somebody they have gained trust with, so their initial instinct is to be sceptical of others. Typically a child must form an attachment before they are 1½ years old. If a child fails to do so then afterwards they are likely to struggle severely in being able to form an attachment. Abuse can also affect the child’s speech and language milestone this is because they are likely to be timid and wary of interacting with others, because there may be a scenario when a child tries to speak at home and they are either severely shouted at or physically harmed by a caregiver, this would have a major impact on a child’s vocal development.
