P2 in this section of the report I will be discussing how leaders are appointed and the roles and responsibilities that the leader has. A leader can be appointed by either promotion, nomination, election, delegation and volunteering. One of the roles that a leader does is a motivator this means keeping the teams morale high and to get the best out of there team. An example of where this is used in the public services is in the army when out on tour and living of rations the leader will need to keep his team morale high so that they can successfully complete their goal. Another role of a leader is planner this means that the leader should plan efficiently so that they can be ready for anything not just the task at hand this is so they can deal with anything that they are not expecting an example of this is when a police officer has to plan the policing of a football match where they will have to take into consideration fans running onto the pitch and hooligans for the safety of others at the game. Another role is communicator this means the leader is able to communicate with his team so that they know what they are doing and are not in doubt, an example of this is in the army if the team doesn’t know their objective then clear communication between the leader and his team is key so that lives aren’t put at risk.
This is a leader who orders policies and procedures, they decide the goals that should be achieved and control events without important contribution from the people below them, an example where this type of leadership style would work in the public services is the army, when you are out on a tour and you are told to get down you will follow their instructions and get down so you won’t get shot, this style works in the army because it keeps discipline within the army also it helps new recruits know what they are meant to be doing and when they are supposed to do it. This is a style where the members of the team will have more of a role in the decision making process. An example of where the democratic leadership style would work is in the NHS, if there is people waiting to be seen by a nurse they will talk about what is important for the patient and who is the best person to help them.
This is where the leaders allow the team to make the decisions and the leaders will sit back the team are given the power, an example of this in the public service is

This is where a leader is very direct and supervises the team and organises them, they like to use rewards and punishments for motivation, for example in the public services it would work in public services is in the army if a solider does not do as they are told or question something they will be given a punishment and it won’t just be the individual who is punished they could punish the whole team.
The style is where a leader focuses on individuals in the group to make changes and produce a vision to influence the change through loyal members in the group, an example of where this style will work in the public services is in the NHS when there are trainee staff the leader will show them what to do and will then let them do it under supervision because they are dealing with someone else’s life.
This style solely focuses on following rules and obeying the authority, this would work in the army because in when on tour they should

This type of leadership style motivates staff to meet organizations goals which helps them be positive in work and feel better about their work
Task orientated
This leadership style is where the leader will focus on the tasks that have to be performed so that they can meet specific goals and to achieve a performance standard
