Recycling of Construction and Demolition Materials Essay

There are numerous articles focusing on how to minimize pollution in our world. Everyday, lots of wastes are being generated by humans in their everyday dealings. As a result, much contamination can be seen in many communities.

In order to counteract this dilemma, many people are finding solutions on how to decrease the production of garbage in the production of goods, construction, agriculture, industries and others. In some residential areas, segregation of wastes is already being practiced to separate the wastes that can still be recycled and those that are not.  In some factories, garbage is being incinerated to eliminate these wastes. Others followed the same by putting up their own approaches in dealing with the eradication of waste materials.

Construction firms are also producing vast amounts of wastes in their everyday work. It is considered as one of the main producers of wastes in various countries. Junks which includes broken glasses, asphalts, concrete and other waste materials that are being generated by these construction companies are just a few of the different wastes to mention.

In order to minimize the magnitude of these wastes produced, many companies implemented the process of recycling. Recycling is a process of making useful things out of garbage and wastes. In doing the process of recycling, specific processes should be learned and followed thoroughly. For many architects and engineers, recycling is vital in their scope of work since their work should also give emphasis on the preservation of environment.

Recently, there are private agencies that were given accreditation to provide ratings on how much wastes were reduced by the different construction companies. This evaluation is then submitted to the concerned financial investors and capitalists to serve as a recommendatory document on those firms that adhered to the waste reduction policy.Recycling has become one of the most important concerns of every industry.

It also provided jobs to other people that gave them additional income in their everyday living. Recycling also has made significant contributions to establish a more sustained progress in the community. With this process, we limit the production of pollutants and reuse those that are considered wastes.

In addition to that, recycling also pave way in the conservation of power consumption and water usage. With these benefits, a lot of money can be saved needed in the construction of a given structure. Some key states in the United States have formulated rules pertaining to the disposal of construction and demolition wastes coming from the concerned companies. They strictly implemented laws on banning the disposal of the aforementioned waste products. On the other hand, some cities required these construction companies to have their own garbage reduction scheme in their respective areas. With these developments, recycling has really become an integral part of building construction. There are several reasons why do we have to recycle the wastes coming for the construction and demolition sites.

One clear rationale is that it costs less to recycle that to dispose these waste materials. Since the government implemented the strict policy on the proper disposal of these junks, it would likely cost more than the process of recycling the accumulated wastes in their respective firms. In recycling, these wastes can be sold into cash or even used again on other purposes.

Another reason is that approximately all of the waste products of the construction and demolition sites are easily to recycle.Broken bricks are one particular waste that is considered as a waste product in the construction and demolition sites. This waste generally comes from demolished buildings or any type of concrete structure. Its possible market is on the industries that produces bricks as a part of the mixture production. These brick-producing companies recycle this waste into a new concrete block combined with the raw materials in the brick production. The next types of wastes are the iron bars which come from the framework support of the demolished structures. These wastes can be sold as scrap materials to the steel producing industries which will make use of the said scrap metals as the raw material in producing steel bars.

In the same manner, metals other than iron can also sold as scrap metals, which can be used in the production of alloy metals.Wood comes third on the list of the junks coming from the demolition and construction sites. These wastes can be used as a fuel to boiler engines and also as a subcomponent to new ply boards. On the other hand, some woods, particularly pre-fabricated woods can be reused again in small structures and residential houses. Other pre-fabricated woods can also be used as fuel for the boiler engines if the wood has acquired much damage.Gypsum walls are also counted as possible waste products in the demolition sites.

These wastes can be recycled and used as an additional component to soils. Some companies also buy these wastes and used these junks as raw materials for new gypsum boards. There are several approaches in recycling gypsum being practiced by some of the companies. One particular strategy is that the company itself recycles their end procedure wastes, making new wall boards out of these wastes. An additional manner of recycling depends on the original material used in manufacturing gypsum boards. Many companies have produced gypsum board out of recycled papers, making it easier to recycle once the need arises to. Tiles used in decorating the ceiling of a structure can also be classified as a waste product that can be recycled. Before, these materials are just being dumped and thrown away form the site into the landfills.

Recently, there are companies which developed a new approach in reusing the ceiling materials. These are environment-friendly programs because it prevents more garbage to be dumped in the landfill. It also offers numerous benefits including less expenses being spent in recycling compared to dumping it into the disposal areas. Another benefit that this program offers is that more lot space is being saved due to fewer junks is being disposed through landfill. However, most of the companies purchase these waste materials only in huge volumes. Porcelain products can also be recycled by using it as a component in ornamental decorations. The main problem with this type of waste product is that it takes more effort to separate the porcelain with the other materials.

This requires manual segregation of the porcelain and the other materials associated with it.Roofing materials are also recyclable. This material can be made up of metals, asphalt, or plastics. Roofs made up of metals such as aluminum and galvanized iron can be used as scrap material. These scrap materials can be recycled into new metal roofs or other metal structures.

Asphalt roofs, on the other hand, can be used as a raw material in structures that is made up of asphalt. It can also be used in building pavements out of this type of material.Carpets are also considered as a recyclable material. Manufacturers of carpets buy these wastes and recycled them to make new carpets. There are various options that pertain to the recycling of carpets. If the carpet is still in good condition, these carpets can just be donated to other institution for reuse. This is perhaps the best recycling method in dealing with carpets.

If the carpet has slight damage, some parts of the carpet can still be restored and used in vinyl production. Mixed fragments can also be recycled further by specific processes as defined by particular companies dealing with these types of wastes. Generally, there are several steps in recycling such diverse wastes into useful applications. Some companies do manual sorting of different materials like wood, metals and other materials.

A detailed process in dealing with the recycling of such mixtures of rubbish materials includes proper inspection of the contents of the fragments. This is done to remove any unsafe components in the mixed rubbish materials. Presort comes next where identifying of non recyclable materials and materials that can readily be reused is done. This particular step depends on the company’s recycling facilities or method. The next step is to grind the residual materials using grinder machines.

Metals are then removed after the grinding process using magnets. After this process, the final grinding procedure is done. The recycling of waste materials from construction and demolition sites needs better approaches to ensure that these wastes will be properly dealt with.  Before any recycling process can befurnished, assurance that there would be outlets or recipients of the wastes should be established. Complete recycling process includes having definite buyers of the junk materials and the entire tedious process itself.

Such moves by different companies to reduce wastes should be well commended by the corresponding communities. The government should provide tax incentives for those buyers of these waste materials so that more would invest on these endeavors. On the same manner, companies exercising such waste reduction scheme should be given due merits by their respective local government units. On the other hand, those who would not initiate such reforms in dealing with their waste should be penalized in order to directly impress the laws regarding the proper disposal of wastes. Each person should realize the importance of recycling processes in preserving our environment. Lots of pollutants continue to threaten our ecosystem and before it is too late, waste reduction should be practiced religiously. If only each person and every construction company will go hand in hand in practicing such elimination of waste production, our world will have substantial improvements in terms of the presence of pollutants in our surroundings. All of these efforts will surely give us the reforms we need to heal our world and preserve our very own natural resources.

Lastly, sustainable growth will be achieved by every company and better improvements in the lives of every person will be obtained when all of these recycling processes will be implemented by everybody concerned.ReferencesLennon, M.(2005).
