I wish to pursue a career in research that involves creative thinking, challenging problems and is also relevant to the industry in particular and society in general. My keen interest in Manufacturing and Design field accompanied by good analytical skills, problem solving capabilities and visualization which are the heart and core of research have prompted me to go in for graduate studies. As a child, I was always intrigued by the working of complex mechanisms and equipment. I used to spend a lot of time trying to explore and figure out their principle.In school I found myself drawn towards subjects that required in-depth analysis and logical thinking.
I was awed by their simple fundamentals which form the governing basis for a lot of machinery. In order to understand these concepts I took part in science fairs and practical workshops. This exposure taught me the importance of simple and practical design. To understand the principles and practical aspects of designing a product I decided to pursue my career in engineering. Indian Institutes of Technology, which rank among the premier engineering institutes in Asia, stood out as the obvious choice.My diligent and methodical work helped me secure admission to mechanical engineering department in IIT- Madras with the distinction of being in the top 1% of all candidates.
In the three years of my undergraduate study, I have been exposed to diverse topics ranging from thermal sciences, fluid mechanics to computer aided manufacturing and design. As per the requirements of the institute I was also exposed to the needs and aspirations of the industry through a series of well orchestrated lectures by eminent people who are leaders in their field.These courses have helped me build a strong foundation in Mechanical Engineering and laid the necessary groundwork for pursuing graduate studies. In my sophomore year I credited Dynamics of Machinery and was intrigued by the new concepts which were introduced. Due to my inclination for analytical problems I found the course interesting and did quite well.
In order to gauge my fundamentals, as a part of this course I also analyzed a four bar ellipsograph. In the same year I was introduced to courses in manufacturing and design like Design of Machine Element and Manufacturing Technology.These have provided me with useful insight into the principles, processes, stages and considerations required in the field of product design. In the subsequent year I credited Control Systems. I found the complex mathematics and in-depth analysis required to be my forte and did exceedingly well. But it was not until the end of the third year, when I got an opportunity to have an industrial training in ITC Ltd that I realized how important a role Control Systems plays in industry.
My project during the Industrial training was to increase the efficiency of compressed air supply in a FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) plant.With the help of adequate equipment I was able to bring about considerable modification in the pneumatic pipeline layout. This brought about a considerable reduction in cost per cubic foot of compressed air. This being my first exposure to Industry filled me with a considerable sense of achievement and self satisfaction.
Out of my strong conviction that knowledge of computers is a pre requisite in today’s research, which involves analyzing complex structures and designs in a relatively short time, I credited Computer Aided Design in my junior year.This course opened up a realm of possibilities in the field of Finite Element Analysis which I could never before have imagined. As part of this course, I was required to analyze complex structures under various states of loading and find their resonant frequencies using my own computer codes. I followed up this course with Applied Finite Elements which introduced me to packages like ANSYS and NISA. As a part of my endeavor to learn more about the use of computers in my field I am presently crediting Computer Aided Machine Design.
In my junior year I was introduced to MEMS by Prof Krishnan Balasubramaniam. He had asked me along with two others to present a seminar on MEMS technology and application. The brief stint at the MEMS fabrication Laboratory along with the research I did, which included literature surveys on topics like micro sensors, micro fluidics and etching techniques kindled my interest for the subject. This resulted in my taking up the senior project in a related field namely “Non Destructive Characterization of MEMS structures using Hybrid Microscopy”.The field of MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) seems to appeal to me from among the various disciplines of Mechanical Engineering. The wide range of opportunities in this field which includes Designing, Manufacturing and Analyzing of MEMS devices, along with the impact MEMS has had on the field of On-line data collection and Miniaturization of mechanisms has reinforced my desire to do graduation in this field. The journals that I have read in the field of MEMS and Nanotechnology have made me realize the importance of productive research in this fieldI feel that University of Illinois, Urbana with its rich blend of competent faculty, intense curriculum, and cherished history of success, state of the art laboratories and multiethnic diversity among students would be the ideal place to shape my career.
The innovative research projects being undertaken by your faculty along with the positive feedbacks that I have received about your university from my seniors who were graduates at your university have influenced me to seek admission into your university.My objective is to enhance and strengthen my knowledge base in the field of Mechanical Engineering. The ideal path towards this, I feel, would be by pursuing graduate studies in Mechanical Engineering. In the long run I seek to be the leader in my field, which requires fostering of team spirit and good will besides intellectual and creative enrichment.
University of Illinois, Urbana with its team of highly motivated and industrious graduate students would hence be the ideal start to my career. I can assure you that given a chance I shall strive to live up to the expectations.
