In this universe where image and individuality play such a important function in life it’s merely natural that people fear being rejected ; they urge a sense of belonging and so they conform to what is seen as correct in society. This is true for most but there are the occasional few who strive to put themselves apart from the remainder and follow what they believe in. These persons are considered to be different and because of it they are frequently alienated by society. Bing different can be considered anything from looking a certain manner. talking a certain manner. moving a certain off. and etc.

This demonstrates the relationship and clang between the person and the community. In the essay “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” . by Gloria Anzaldua. the writer negotiations about her childhood in Texas and how she was restrained from talking Spanish because it wasn’t seen as “American. ” alternatively she was told to talk English. We shortly learn that her existent linguistic communication is Chicano Spanish. which is a cross between Spanish and English and because of it she is looked down upon by both English and Spanish talkers.

Throughout the essay she struggles with her ain individuality as she conforms by talking a certain linguistic communication in different state of affairss to suit in but subsequently in her life she takes pride in her civilization as she discovers that that is the lone manner to take pride in herself. On the other manus the essay by Franklin Foer “How Soccer Explains the World: An Improbable Theory of Globalization” he uses association football as a metaphor about globalisation and uses it to demo the clang of civilizations in America.

Soccer was seen as a menace to the American society because it didn’t originate in the U. S. and it threatens the popularity of baseball. “a true American athletics. ” In both essays there is a distinguishable relationship between the person and the community and they show how the community will make whatever they can to quash those they view as different. Looking back at Anzaldua’s essay there were several occasions where she was discriminated against. One illustration of this occurrence is when she was in school and was punished for speech production in Spanish. Her Anglo instructor said to her “If you want to be American. speak ‘American. ’ If you don’t like it. travel back to Mexico where you belong. ” ( 374 ) .

In other words. the instructor is stating that merely because she speaks Spanish she doesn’t measure up to be an American. To be an American you must talk English and that is what she is made to believe. When she speaks English the Spanish talkers say to her “Pocho. cultural treasonist. you’re talking the oppressor’s linguistic communication by talking English. you’re destroying the Spanish linguistic communication. ” ( 375 ) . The Spanish talkers are naming her a treasonist for talking English and so she is alienated by both the English and the Spanish talkers.

Her existent linguistic communication is Chicano Spanish which is a cross between English and Spanish. At first she is ashamed by her ain linguistic communication but subsequently on she takes pride in it. She claims “I will no longer be made to experience ashamed of bing. I will hold my voice: Indian. Spanish. white. I will hold my serpent’s tongue-my woman’s voice. my sexual voice. my poet’s voice. I will get the better of the tradition of silence. ” ( 378 ) . In other words. Anzaldua is saying that she will no longer be ashamed of her civilization and that she will take pride in her voice. This demonstrates what makes Anzaldua an person that stands out from the crowd and the community.

She doesn’t conform to how people want her to be and she sticks up for what she believes in. In Foer’s essay he uses association football to show how Americans fear globalisation. Allen Bara. a sports writer for the Wall Street Journal. proves that Americans fear globalisation. Bara believes that the people who support association football want the U. S. to “get with the remainder of the world’s plan. ” Bara sees the U. S. following suit with the remainder of the universe as something negative demoing his fright of globalisation. The U. S. is the lone topographic point where a big figure of people really run against association football Many of the people who are against association football are devouring protagonists of baseball.

Foer claims that “The United States. with its unashamedly dynamic civilization. doesn’t have excessively many profoundly rooted. transgenerational traditions that it can claim as its ain. Baseball is one of the few. ” The point Foer is seeking to do is that because the U. S. doesn’t have much traditions of its ain Americans praise the few that they have such as Baseball and attack association football because they believe it is a menace to their beloved athletics. The people on Foer’s side that are for association football aren’t so perfect themselves on the other manus. Foer claims “I’ve been around plenty of America’s association football cognoscenti to cognize that they invite maltreatment.

They are chronic prigs. so clannish. in fact. that they think nil of turning against their companions. ” ( 647 ) . Foer is stating that there are some protagonists of association football that are rich and stuck up giving association football fans a bad image. This demonstrates that Foer acknowledges that both sides aren’t perfect. The essays of both authors are similar in a manner because they both talk about something that is repressed by society. In Anzaldua’s essay it is her ain linguistic communication that is being repressed and in Foer’s essay it is association football that is being repressed.

In a manner they are different besides because Anzaldua’s essay is more personal whereas Foer’s essay is more about a clang of civilization in America. Bing an person in a community means remaining true to yourself and making what you believe in alternatively of going what society wants you to go.
