Facebook allows user to share and get connected all over the world. User may interact with people they may know offline and meet new people online. Besides, there are objects on the Facebook that user can interact with such as pages, groups, events, community pages, digital games on Facebook and so forth. User can find people that share common interests like hobbies, favourite music, television and others on the Facebook virtual groups.

User will have their own personal profile and “friends” who can post comments, view each other’s profile and so on. Besides, there is also functionality like private messages, update status, “Like”, “Comment” and “Poke” friends. A life without Facebook is very difficult for students because that is the only way for them to communicate with other people, share and talk more about their experiences and emotions. One of the wonderful features on Facebook is “Share” that enables all type of information like latest issues, news, university activities, entertainments, notes, web links, photos and videos is spread widely through the Facebook.

According to Sharifah, Siti, Jusang & Mohd (2011), “Facebook seems to be a strong attraction for students to go online because the web support the motivations like self-discovery, social enhancement, and interpersonal connectivity for them to join the site” (p. 96). Students can learn by what their friends share and other people posts on their wall. This can be called learn by a self-discovery where the students are free to discover new knowledge and gain experience from that. In addition, research by Sharifah et al.

(2011, p. 02) stated that, students tend to share information on Facebook due to save time and money as well as the fastest way to share information with others. Thus, people have variety of activities that can be done on Facebook as well as the opportunity to interact with other users, get new information and share to the others.

Because of that, this study helps to explore the activities done and information sharing of undergraduate Kulliyyah of Information & Communication Technology (KICT) students on Facebook. This study will focus on the use of Facebook among undergraduate KICT students in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).The targeted users that will answer the questionnaire are the undergraduate students of KICT that consists of two major courses which are Computer Science (CS) and Information Technology (IT). The questionnaire will be distributed on the required courses through Google Docs on KICT groups on Facebook. 2. 2 Statement of the problem Facebook is part of our daily life routines. Facebook users can have their own personal profile, meet friends online, make private chatting with anybody, attach files to other users, and get notification functions that display the update issues or news.Furthermore, users can join groups organized by individuals, workplaces, schools, or colleges that shared similar interests (Roblyer, McDaniel, Webb, Herman & Witty, 2010).

User can share and post useful information on status, friends’ Wall post, private messages or the relevant group. This will advantage the students because they will be sharing useful information and gaining knowledge from that. However, Breslin & Decker declared that: Instead, users often connect to others for no other reason than to boost the number of friends they have in their profiles. Many more browse other users’ profiles simply for curiosity’s sake. These explicitly established connections become increasingly meaningless because they aren’t backed up by common objects or activities. (2007, p.

87) It shows that user is not usually using Facebook for sharing common interest and knowledge but has other intentions that are not needed and good for them. It is unbeneficial to the user plus wasting time on using Facebook. Nevertheless, there are a small number of researchers carried out on the use of Facebook among IIUM students. Thus, it is important for the researcher to determine the advantages of using Facebook among students, especially IIUM students. 2. 3 Objective/s of the study The objective of the study is to investigate: * the benefits of using Facebook by determine the type of activities done and information that being shared on Facebook among undergraduate KICT students.

The profile may contain some basic information of the user.

The user may set their profile page to be private or public to other users. The users’ friends may write on the user Wall post and tagging other friends that they want or know. The user can comment and like the Wall post.

Other than that, news feed will display the latest status or Wall post made by his or her friends. Lastly, the applications on Facebook can be use by any user. The types of applications are music, game play, videos, horoscopes and others. The example of game play applications are SimCity, Cafe World and FarmVille. 2.

Literature Review The use of Facebook in education learning is not a new practice by lecturers. Education learning using Facebook is being implemented as the technology arises. Furthermore, the current college students grew up in a technology era and SNS is just part of students’ daily routines.According to Mazer, Murphy and Simonds (2007), Teacher use of Facebook provides a unique perspective to the current computer-mediated communication (CMC) literature. With large numbers of students and teachers using this virtual social network as a medium of communication, it is important to understand how students use and make sense of specific social networks. Besides, According to Stollak, Vandenberg, Burklund and Weiss stated that, “The University of New Hampshire said that a majority of students use social networking for social connections and entertainment, but are also using it for education and professional reasons.

(2011). Similarly, current thinking agrees that education learning using Facebook can be implemented among students as this medium is widely used and convenient for a lecturer and students to gain extra information and knowledge. Hence, it highlights on the benefit of using Facebook in education learning. 3. Methodology 3.

The survey method used to achieve the objectives of this study by distributing the questionnaire among undergraduate KICT students. On 27th to 29th July 2012, the questionnaire was conducted among undergraduate KICT students through SNS, Facebook. The questionnaire will be posted on three groups on Facebook that are specifically for KICT students. The respondents can answer the survey 24 hours within the three days. 3.

People love to use Facebook because of its features that able to communicate with friends, update status and many more. Facebook is a medium for sharing and getting information because everyone has the Facebook account and always shared on Facebook. In Facebook, everyone can post, like and comment on that peoples’ post.

Everyone can gather all related information of the study and posted in timeline in order to share the gathered information to other people. Majority of the respondents are using Facebook for the good purposes which are to get and share information available on the Facebook as well as to get connected with others. From the finalized survey, the researcher can conclude that the user likes to share a pictures regarding religion information that his or her get from the other websites. The respondents ove to share about religion information on their timeline thus it reflects IIUM students.

The purposes of sharing the information through Facebook are to let other people learn new things, remind other people, to have personal reminder and so forth. For example, by sharing religion information, Islamic-based people might be aware of knowledge or understanding about Islam that they are not aware of before. Thus, it is really important to post and share about Islamic thingy for Muslim to have a reminder and get repentant every day. 5. The activities involved just need to be good activities with good intentions. The use of Facebook might be harm for us thus we need to overcome this situation by know how to use the Facebook correctly and efficiently. The information sharing among KICT students will bring beneficial to all regardless of level of study.

KICT students should know the use of Facebook might benefits other users. Hence, it is very important for KICT students to use the Facebook correctly and make sure to give benefits not to give harm to other people. .

2 Limitations and Implications There are several limitations in this study that is the limited number of respondents on undergraduate KICT students. Besides, the population of KICT students also small compared to other Kuliyyah. Thus, for better future research, the number of population should be increased to the whole university or other university to get more applicable results. 5. 3 Recommendations of the study For the next future research, it can be done by differentiating the use of Facebook between genders in emotional-based, behaviour and study-based.It might be interesting to compare the use of Facebook among IIUM students in the perspective of the genders. Besides, it can be compare with the use of Facebook among IIUM and other universities. It might be beneficial for the future study to investigate and compare the activities done and information shared on Facebook between the universities.
