The most important theme in both the play and movie is love, as despite endless conflict and rivalry love will overcome all. This is seen throughout both scripts. The Shakespearian play is set in Verona Italy compared to the modernised film gnomeo and Juliet, which is set on the same street, same house but both live two completely different lives.
Love is an important thematic element in both Shakespeare’s work and Gnomeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet advocates the forcefulness of love, that love will control you and people will do anything in the name of true love. Various types of love is depicted throughout both the play and movie, including the sensual, physical, proper, contractual, passionate and romantic. Physical love is both advocated by Juliet’s motherlike frog and the nurse, by demonstrating a mother like figure for each character. Contractual and proper love is signified by Juliet’s unwanted significant lover, known as Paris in both scripts. Romantic love is demonstrated by both Romeo and Juliet and Gnomeo and Juliet. The main message from the movie gnomeo and Juliet is that love will overcome all problems and difficulties including cultural differences, and in this case gnomes and frogs.
