Two feuding Families combine in mourning

Two feuding Families combine in mourning, due to the forbidden love of Romeo and Juliet. The ideological Shakespearian world is represented in the film Gnomeo and Juliet, with happy endings and an endless amount of joy. The most important theme in both the play and movie is love, as despite endless conflict and rivalry love will overcome all. This is seen throughout both scripts. The Shakespearian play is set in Verona Italy compared to the modernised film gnomeo and Juliet, which is set on the same street, same house but both live two completely different lives.
Love is an important thematic element in both Shakespeare’s work and Gnomeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet advocates the forcefulness of love, that love will control you and people will do anything in the name of true love. Various types of love is depicted throughout both the play and movie, including the sensual, physical, proper, contractual, passionate and romantic. Physical love is both advocated by Juliet’s motherlike frog and the nurse, by demonstrating a mother like figure for each character. Contractual and proper love is signified by Juliet’s unwanted significant lover, known as Paris in both scripts. Romantic love is demonstrated by both Romeo and Juliet and Gnomeo and Juliet. The main message from the movie gnomeo and Juliet is that love will overcome all problems and difficulties including cultural differences, and in this case gnomes and frogs.

Nanette the frog was inspired by the nurse in Romeo and Juliet. The nurse is depicted as a clumsy frog in the child friendly film, gnomeo and Juliet. Her mother like figure still lives on and guides Juliet, whilst representing a green water spout frog.

the Shakespearean play is a dramatic tragedy, the director of gnomeo and Juliet has depicted certain scenes out of Shakespeare’s original play and has created a child friendly film which advocates love, happiness and a changed ending. This is suited for children rather than the original play
In conclusion, Gnomeo and Juliet is very different to the Shakespearean play, Romeo and Juliet. With more differences then similarities, the director of gnomeo and Juliet has strayed far from the original play and has created a more child friendly and modernised film that will directly relate to a contemporary audience.
