Work styles are described as work patterns that develops in everyone lives and stays there until we retire or die. I am a honest believer that even after you retire, we still continue to work. Work is a very essential part of having a great life. Knowing your workstyle is important and it helps point to the kind of work environment, that is most suitable for you. Workstyles can vary from organization, but a few stylers can be : the realistic work style – DOERS, the social work style – HELPERS, the investigative workstyle – PROBLEM-SOLVERS, the enterprising work style- PERSUADERS, the artistic workstyle – CREATORS, and the conventional workstyle – ORGANIZER
According to psychology today, emotional intelligence is “the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others”. Having this skills is useful in a diversified organization and identifies emotional awareness from others; the ability to harness emotions and apply them, the ability to manage emotions, including regulating our own.
I think those with a problem solver workstyle, would score a very high percentage in emotional intelligence. Problem solvers exhibits investigative characteristic. They are more observant of body language, mood changes, and can sense in their gut feelings that something is wrong. People with strong investigative work styles prefer to think rather than to act, to organize and understand rather than to persuade. They evaluate, analyze, and figure out what makes things tick or analyze the root cause of the problem with knowing little information. They spend a lot of their time in the world of possibilities thinking.
Leadership is the action of leading people in an organization towards achieving goals. A role all leaders should have is influencing employee behaviors. The leader sets a clear vision for the organization, motivates employees, guides employees through the work process and then builds morale. If you cannot influence as a leader, then you’ve became a leader to without proper molding, true leaders create other to become a leader and causes a ripple effect. When you can influence, you have the ability and skill set to change a persons mindset, or transition from disagreement to agreement. As an influential leader, you would then be open to new ideas, insights, and revelations that can lead to better ways to accomplish your organization’s mission. An article, I found summed the role of a leaders as “creating conditions under which all your followers can perform independently and effectively toward a common objective”.
In conclusion I believe that work styles affect leaders and followers because it’s harder to persuade everyone to adopt the vision you see for the organization. One workstyles may not work for another, and you may find or experience lots of conflicts in the work space. A second reason why workstyles affects leaders and followers is because of culture. In certain countries many people who are in a higher status quo than you, are treat with the utmost respect, you will seldomly find employees and leaders debating on what they feel is best, ” what the boss says goes”. So in a work environment one might regard his boss of higher standard and value, and the employee might no, which can shows inconsistencies of power. With different workstyles in place, you will constantly have to wear different hats when it comes to subordination, but the purpose for the company stays the same. You don’t adopt others work styles, but you play according to their character and strengths in order to reach the shared vision. Finally, emotional intelligence may affect leaders and followers because you may like to get to the bottom of things, by noticing the way a person is acting, the leader or follower may form opinions and ask questions about the body language that person is portraying. Having this type of characteristics as a leader or follower can sometimes make people assume you are overbearing. It is great to always help solve a problem, but sometimes individuals like their privacy, and want space to assess the situation before telling someone else. It best to know your balance in between your workstyle; the styles of others, and to be sure when to operate on your emotional intelligence.
